Looking for a quick bounce back, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team was back in action Saturday night at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
This time, the Lakers welcomed the Toronto Varsity Blues to town, with both teams looking for their first win of the season after suffering losses Friday night.
After a bit of a slow start, Nipissing poured it on late and came away with a 73-60 win, their first of the week.
Nipissing was a bit slow out of the gates and trailed 13-8 late in the first, with both teams scoring seven points in the final three minutes of the opening quarter, making the score 20-15 in favour of Toronto after one.
In the second, Nipissing came out flying and not only closed the gap, but also took the lead.
Thanks to outscoring Toronto 28-18, they took a 43-38 lead into the halftime break.
Toronto answered back in the third, outscoring the Lakers by six to close the gap and setup a showdown in the fourth.
The Lakers saved the best for last, dominating the fourth and final quarter, outscoring Toronto 19-5 and running away with the game and cruising to a 13-point win.
Sophie Milner led the Lakers with 17 points,
Taryn Gauthier added 14 and
Ella Bannister posted 10 in the victory.
Next weekend, Nipissing travels to play the Guelph Gryphons Friday night before returning home to face the Brock Badgers Sunday afternoon.
