CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR GUIDELINES

At Nipissing University, we are committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where all individuals can participate comfortably in recreation, fitness, and wellness activities.

To support the health and safety of facility users, maintain our equipment, and create a positive experience for everyone, all participants are expected to wear appropriate clothing and footwear while using the Athletics Centre. The current page similarly frames these guidelines around health, safety, hygiene, and equipment protection.

Clothing Guidelines

Participants should wear clean, functional attire that is appropriate for physical activity and allows for safe participation in the facility.

Clothing should:

  • Be clean and suitable for exercise and recreational activities.
  • Be free of profanity, discriminatory language, hate speech, or offensive graphics.
  • Be free of attachments, accessories, or features that could damage equipment or create a safety risk.
  • Allow for safe use of equipment and participation in activities.
  • Be worn in a manner that respects the shared nature of the facility and contributes to a welcoming environment for all.

Clothing is not permitted if it:

  • Contains offensive, discriminatory, or inappropriate messaging or imagery.
  • Creates a health or safety concern for the wearer or others.
  • May damage facility equipment or surfaces.

Footwear Guidelines

Appropriate footwear must be worn in fitness and activity spaces.

Permitted:

  • Clean, closed-toe athletic footwear designed for physical activity.

Not Permitted:

  • Sandals, flip-flops, slides, Crocs, or other open-toed footwear in activity areas.
  • Outdoor footwear in fitness rooms, gymnasiums, weight rooms, fitness studios, or other athletic spaces.

Participants are encouraged to bring clean indoor athletic shoes for use within the facility.

Creating a Respectful and Inclusive Environment

The Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre welcomes individuals of all identities, expressions, backgrounds, body types, abilities, and fitness levels.

We ask all users to:

  • Treat others with courtesy and respect.
  • Follow facility policies and staff direction.
  • Use equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Contribute to an environment where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and comfortable participating in physical activity.
