WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Lakers lose close game in shootout

Lehmann makes 28 saves in close contest

North Bay, ON - Nipissing Women's Hockey lost a closely contested game 3-2 in a shootout to the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 1.

Nipissing opened the scoring in the first period as Lana Duriez found the back of the net, assisted by Melissa Svienson and Anna Synder.

The Lakers added another with under 30 seconds to go in the opening frame, as Melissa Svienson recorded her second goal of the season, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Jill Hennessy and Tessa Kosec picked up assists on Nipissing's second goal.

The second period produced no goals for either squad. Nipissing's Carlie Primomo recorded the only penalty infraction of the middle frame, a 2-minute minor for tripping.

The Lakers controlled a 2-0 lead into the second half of the third period before Brock found the back of the net on the power play, cutting the lead to 1. Kylee Strano of the Badgers recorded her second goal of the season on the play.

Nipissing maintained the 2-1 lead until Brock began pressing late in the frame. The Badgers tied the game with less than 5 seconds to play in regulation as Carly Sardine recorded her second goal of the season.

Overtime solved nothing, sending this game into a shootout.

No players scored for either team in the first four rounds of the shootout before Marin Green of the Badgers found the back of the net in round 5. Needing to score to extend the contest, Lakers forward Abby Lunney found the twine to send the shootout to a sixth round. Marin Green scored again for Brock. Jill Hennessy was stopped on her attempt to extend the shootout, as this game ended in a 3-2 shootout win for Brock.

Lakers netminder Alexandra Lehmann recorded 28 saves on 30 shots in the loss.

Nipissing recorded 27 shots in the loss, while Brock had 31 pucks on net. Nipissing went 0/2 in attempts on the power play; Brock was 1/3 in that category.

Nipissing Women's Hockey is back in action Friday, November 7th at 7pm, taking on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens in North Bay.
