North Bay, ON – The Nipissing Lakers Women' Hockey team scored a big 3-2 overtime win on Saturday, November 29th, 3-2 over the Guelph Gryphons.
Kaitlyn McKenna opened the scoring in the game, giving Guelph a 1-0 lead at the 4:21 mark of the first period. Guelph out-shot Nipissing 10-4 in the opening frame. No penalties were had in the first.
Guelph continued to press in the second period, out-shooting Nipissing 18-6 in the middle frame. Nipissing was shorthanded twice in this period, as Jill Hennessy was called for body checking at 3:37, and Carlie Primomo was called for hooking at 11:31. Guelph's power play could not cash in on either opportunity. Nipissing was the recipient of 1 power play chance, coming at 14:02. The Lakers were unsuccessful in this chance, and the score remained 1-0 Guelph heading into the second intermission.
The Lakers tied the game at 2:55 of the third period as Abby Lunney buried her 7th goal of the season, assisted by Jill Hennessy. The Lakers began to press, looking to take the lead. This was accomplished at 11:28 of the third, as Abby Lunney potted her second goal of the period, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead. This goal was Lunney's 8th tally of the season.
Guelph kept pace and answered back shortly thereafter, as Olivia Knuff tied the game at 2 at 13:21 of the third period.
Both teams had chances down the stretch, but 60 minutes was not enough – this game headed overtime. Nipissing out-shot Guelph 15-5 in the third period.
Just over a minute into extra time, a 2 on 1 chance was formed across centre ice for Nipissing, as Carlie Primomo carried the puck into Guelph territory. She drew Guelph's lone defender to her side, before passing the puck to Tahlia Fisher, who took the first shot, and whack in the second chance to win the game for Nipissing, 3-2. Primomo picked up the assist on the game winner, Fisher's second goal of the season.
Lakers netminder Alex Lehmann had another great start, stopping 31 of 33 shots in the overtime victory.
The win moves Nipissing to 5-8 on the season, with 16 points in 13 games played. Women's Hockey has now finished the 2025 portion of the 2025-26 schedule. The Lakers are back in action on January 7th, 2026, at Ontario Tech at 7PM. Catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
