MEN’S LACROSSE: A Historic Night for Lakers Lacrosse: Ticket Punched to First Baggataway Cup Championship Game

Nipissing defeats McGill 15–12 in a semifinal thriller to earn a spot in Sunday’s national championship game against Guelph.

Brampton, ON — The Nipissing Lakers made history tonight, earning their first-ever Baggataway Cup semifinal victory with a thrilling 15–12 win over the McGill Redbirds. With the win, the Lakers advance to the Baggataway Cup Final tomorrow, Sunday, November 9 at 1 PM, against the Guelph Gryphons—a team Nipissing handed its only regular-season loss earlier this year.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the opening whistle. Nipissing and McGill were tied 3–3 after the first quarter, but the Lakers surged ahead in the second with five goals to take an 8–7 halftime lead. The third quarter saw Nipissing extend the margin with four more goals, and despite a late push from McGill, the Lakers held strong in the fourth to secure the win.

Jason Knox, tonight's Player of the Game, delivered a dominant performance with 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points, orchestrating the offense and setting the tone. Zach Tarr continued his stellar tournament with 4 goals and 2 assists (6 points), while Ben King added 3 goals and 1 assist (4 points). Carter Tait chipped in 3 goals, and Kaleb Fulkerson contributed 1 goal and 2 assists (3 points). Nick Hulbert scored once to round out the Lakers' scoring. In net, Connor O'Toole was outstanding again, making key saves to preserve the lead in the final quarter.

The atmosphere at Terry Fox Stadium was electric, powered by the unwavering support of Lakers fans. Their energy and passion carried the team through every pivotal moment of this historic victory.

Tomorrow marks a milestone for Nipissing men's lacrosse — their first-ever appearance in the Baggataway Cup Final, the national championship for men's university field lacrosse. The Lakers will battle the Guelph Gryphons at 1 PM at Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, with the ultimate prize on the line.
