WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS PUT IN COMPLETE EFFORT AND TOP BROCK 3-1

While the playoffs are a lock, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team is still battling for top spot in the OUA East Division.

The Lakers are in a logjam with Toronto and Ottawa for the top three spots in the division with one game left on the schedule for each team.

Nipissing hosted the Brock Badgers Saturday afternoon to wrap up the regular season.

A strong, 60-minute effort translated into a 3-1 victory, ensuring the first or second seed in the division for the postseason.

Both teams had chances during the first, but neither could find the back if the net, despite a few power play opportunities for the Lakers.

After a scoreless first, with the Lakers leading 10-7 in the shot department, Nipissing finally got on the board in the middle frame.

First, on a 2-on-1, Madison Desmarais snapped a shot upstairs to put the Lakers up 1-0 early in the period.

The lone assist in the game's first marker went to Sarah Kjemhus

Nipissing doubled their lead at the midway mark of the second, when Malory Dominico was hooked on a breakaway, giving her a penalty shot.

Dominico made no mistake, firing the puck under the Badgers goalie blocker cashing in on her chance.

Thanks to the two second period tallies, the Lakers took a 2-0 advantage into the intermission, despite the shots favouring Brock, 16-15.

In the third, the Lakers put the game away with a late goal.

Jill Hennessy made it 3-0 Nipissing with under seven minutes to go.

Desmarais made it a multi-point night with an assist, while Ashley Taciuk had the other helper.

Brock managed to get on the board, scoring with three minutes left in the contest, but it wasn't enough, as Nipissing picked up the win and a valuable three points.

Chantelle Sandquist finished with 22 saves for the Lakers, earning a win to wrap up the year.

Next up, the Lakers will hit the ice in the post-season, with opponents, dates and times to be determined.
