North Bay, ON – Nipissing Men's Volleyball scored a huge 3-0 win over the Brock Badgers on January 10th at RJS Athletic Centre.
The first set opened with Nipissing jumping to a 4-2 lead, followed by a 9-4 lead off of kills from Jack Svendsen, Taydon Shantz, and Marc Marchand. Brock would take four of the next five points to draw closer, but the Lakers answered with three in a row to lead 13-8. Nipissing would maintain their lead as the teams went back and forth in the middle of the set, leading 20-14. Nipissing would take 5 of the final 8 points to close the set in impressive fashion, winning 25-17. Trent O'Brien contributed 3 key kills down the stretch to close the first.
The second set would remain at a tie until Nipissing took three points in a row to lead 11-8. Nipissing would battle to maintain their lead, eventually getting to 17-14. Another three in a row would build the lead to 20-15. From there, Brock would score three points to keep the match alive, but Nipissing's lead proved too large as the Lakers would close the set at 25-19.
The third set was close to begin once again, as the teams found themselves locked in a 10-10 tie before Nipissing's Zander Kasunich and Taydon Shantz broke the game open. Kasunich and Shantz each scored big kills to give the Lakers a 13-10 lead. The Lakers would then win 6 of the next 9 points to grow their lead to 19-13. Nipissing's Kasunich and Marc Marchand scored key kills to build the lead. Nipissing wouldn't make any mistakes, holding their lead impressively against Brock's attack. The teams would trade points until Nipissing won two in a row to take the third and final set 25-18.
Nipissing's Zander Kasunich led the team with 13 kills, 2 service aces, and 5 digs in the win. Taydon Shantz scored 10 kills, 2 service aces, and 9 digs. Marc Marchand had 8 kills, 2 assists, and 4 digs. Ben Franz scored 8 kills of his own and added 2 solo blocks and 3 assisted blocks on the defensive side of the ball. Jack Svendsen scored 1 kill and added a huge 40 assists and 1 service ace in the win.
The win moves Nipissing to 6-6 on the season. Men's Volleyball's next contest is against the McMaster Marauders on Friday, January 16th at 7:30PM on the road. Watch the match live on OUA.tv.
