WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Lakers beat Brock in five sets

Raymond-Leduc scores 21 kills in thrilling home win

North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Volleyball won a 5-set thriller over the Brock Badgers on Saturday, January 10th.  

The first set began with Nipissing jumping to a 5-2 lead. Brock would catch up and take the lead at 9-7. Nipissing would tie the set at 10 with a Oceane Raymond-Leduc kill and service ace, back to back. Brock would take 3 points in a row before Nipissing won four of five to tie the set at 14. The set would remain close with either team trading opoints before 20-20 was the score. Brock took a 21-20 lead before Nipissing capitalized on two Brock errors to lead 22-21. The Badgers would win 4 points in a row to win the set 25-22 and lead 1-0 in the match.  

Set 2 began in similar fashion as either team traded points to begin the frame. The score one again found itself at a 10-10 tie. Nipissing would take a 17-14 lead off of a Cassie Robinson kill, a Elisabeth Spence kill, and a Kiara Van Steekelenburg service ace.The Lakers would win 4 of the next 7 points to lead 21-17. Brock would battle back and score a few points to keep the set alive, but Nipissing's lead would prove to be too much as the Lakers took the second set 25-21.  

Brock came out swinging strongly in the third, taking a 9-5 lead. The Lakers would wake up and find their footing, eventually tying the set as 12. Nipissing then took control of the set, winning eight points in a row to lead 21-13. Elisabeth Spence recorded two service aces, and Ramanda Bell and Oceane Raymond-Leduc both contributed key kills to build the Laker lead. From there, Brock would battle back but Nipissing's momentum proved to be too much as the Lakers would take the third set 25-17.  

Brock answered in the beginning of the fourth set, taking an 8-4 lead. Nipissing would battle and take advantage of Badger errors, getting the set to just a three point deficit at 14-11 Brock. Oceane Raymond-Leduc and Anna Marie Horvat both had big kills in the middle portion of the set, keeping the Lakers afloat. Brock would lead 21-15 before a Horvat kill and Brock attack error once again got Nipissing to within four points. Brock would finish the set by taking four of the next six points, winning 25-19 and tying the match at two sets apiece.  

Brock jumped to a 3-1 lead in the fifth set before Ocean Raymond-Leduc and a Brock attack error tied the game at three. The set would see a tie at 5 before Nipissing took three points in a row to lead 8-6. The Lakers would win another three in a row to lead 12-8 shortly after. Brock would go on a run of their own, winning 5 of 6 points to tie the match at 13. Nipissing, determined to get the job done, won 3 of the final 4 points in the match, winning 16-14 and 3-2 in the match. Anna Marie Horvat had two big kills in these final points to seal the Lakers victory. 

Ocean Raymond-Leduc led the Lakers with 21 kills, 1 service ace, and 8 digs. Anna Marie Horvat scored 16 kills and had 13 digs in the win. Cassie Robinson scored 9 kills and added 1 service ace and 4 blocks. Ramanda Bell had 7 kills and 3 digs. Madeline Lamothe had 45 assists in the victory.  

The win moves Nipissing to 3-9 on the season. Women's Volleyball is back in action on January 16th at 6PM on the road at McMaster. Catch the match live on OUA.tv.
