North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Hockey suffered a tough 4-0 loss to the Ottawa GeeGees at home on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The GeeGees scored first at 1:26 in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead early in the game. Nipissing had one power play opportunity at 13:17 but could not convert on the advantage. Ottawa doubled their lead at 19:21 of the first and took a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes.
In the second, Nipissing had another power play chance at 3:02 and looked to even the score. The Lakers couldn't convert on the advantage and trailed Ottawa 2-0. Then, at 7:13, Ottawa scored their third goal of the game to double their lead at 3-0. Nipissing had two more power play chances at 13:03, and a 5 on 3 chance at 14:14, but Ottawa's penalty kill stayed perfect as the Lakers failed to record a tally through 40 minutes of play.
Ottawa's Jane McGuire took a cross-checking penalty at 6:38 of the third period, sending Nipissing back to the power play where they did not convert. Ottawa had two power play chances in the final period, but Nipissing goaltender Allie Lehmann stood tall and prevented Ottawa from converting. Ottawa would add a final goal coming off a deflection to take a 4-0 lead, which is where this game would end after 60 minutes.
Nipissing was 0/7 in power play chances in the game, while Ottawa was ¼.
Shots in the game were 23-22 for Nipissing.
The loss moves Women's Hockey to 7-8-4 on the season. Women's Hockey is back in action Friday, Jan. 30 on the road for a matchup with York University at 7PM. Catch the action live on OUA.tv.
