WOMEN'S SOCCER: Lakers collect win, points against tough opponents

North Bay, Ontario – Nipissing Women's Soccer completed a successful two game weekend at Nipissing's Turf Field, picking up a win and draw to take 4/6 points against two tough opponents.

On Saturday, Oct. 3rd, the Queen's Gaels travelled north to take on the Lakers in what was an important game for positioning in the OUA standings.

In the first half, it was Lakers forward Hannah Neville who got the Lakers on the board.

Neville's tally would hold for the entirety of the first half, as the Lakers led 1-0 after 45 minutes of action.

In the second, Queen's tied the game at one apiece in the 65th minute.

However, it was Nipissing's Neville that restored the Lakers lead in the 78th minute as she scored her second goal of the game. Tegan Pennington collected the assist on the goal, and the Lakers once again led by one.

Queen's pressed to create an equalizer, but Nipissing played solid defence and ran out the clock to collect a big 2-1 victory and three points.

Nipissing outshot Queen's 12-6 in the match. Lakers keeper Hayden Hanley made 2 saves.

Then, on Sunday, October 4th, it was the University of Toronto Varsity Blues that were the opposing side as Women's Soccer went for the weekend sweep.

In the first half, it was Annika Nolte who broke the game open, scoring her sixth goal of the season at the 22:37 mark; Nipissing led 1-0.

Toronto quickly countered and tied the match at one at 26:01. 1-1 would be the score through halftime.

In the second, it was Toronto who found the back of the net first, taking a 2-1 lead at the 69th minute.

However, it was Nipissing's Bella Nolte who tied the match again, this time at 2-2, as she scored in the 76th minute.

Both sides would press to score a third in the dying moments of the match, but a 2-2 draw would be the result, and each side would register one point in the OUA standings.

Nipissing outshot Toronto 14-8. Lakers keeper Brooke McMurren recorded 4 saves in the match.

With the win and draw, Nipissing Women's Soccer moves to a 6-2-1 record this season, good for a tie for 2nd place with Toronto in the OUA East with 19 points.

Women's Soccer is back in action on Friday, October 9th at 6:30PM in Ottawa for a matchup with the uOttawa Gee-Gees, the only team ahead of Nipissing in the East division.
