MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ottawa edges Lakers at home

North Bay, ON – Nipissing Men's Basketball suffered a 104-93 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at home on Friday, Feb. 13. 

Ottawa outscored the Lakers 26-25 in the first quarter. Nipissing led 4-3 before Ottawa hit a massive three-pointer to take the lead. Nipissing's Alex Blackmore cut into the Ottawa lead with a three-pointer that kick started the Lakers. Nipissing would battle back and trail by just one point after the first. 

Nipissing and Ottawa each scored 25 points in the second quarter. Nipissing led 44-39 before Ottawa battled back, five points in the final minute of play to take a 51-50 lead into halftime. Nipissing's Alex Blackmore scored six in the quarter off of 2/3 shooting from three. 

In the third, Ottawa outscored the Lakers 26-20. Ottawa led 62-56 and continued to build their lead, scoring in bunches and not letting Nipissing get back into the game. Ryan Heim's three-pointer at 1:49 got Nipissing within a point, but Ottawa answered quickly with two layups to restore a five-point lead. Ottawa would lead 77-70 after three. 

In the final frame, the Lakers would trail 86-76 before Blackmore continued his scoring ways and gave the Lakers some life with a layup. Jeziyah Excell-Johnson and Mateja Vukic would add layups to help the Lakers cut into Ottawa's lead, but the Gee-Gees never let Nipissing regain the lead. Ottawa would score eight points in the final 1:30 of the quarter to win 104-93. 

Nipissing's Alex Blackmore scored 25 points in the loss off of 6/10 3-pt shooting and added 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Jeziyah Excell-Johnson and Chris-Evrard Malonga each scored 15. Ryan Heim added 10 points. 

The Lakers scored 24 points off the bench and added 36 points in the paint. 

The loss moves Men's Basketball to 6-15 on the season. The Lakers are back in action Saturday, Feb. 14 at 6PM when the Carleton Ravens are the opponents.
