WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Lakers win in 5 over Ottawa

Raymond-Leduc has 18 kills, Lamothe 35 assists in big win

North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Volleyball scored a huge 5-set win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees at home on Friday, Feb. 6.  

The Lakers trailed 12-8 in the first set before battling back and taking a 14-13 lead. Ottawa regained the lead at 16-13 and rallied to extend the advantage to 21-17. The Lakers and Gee-Gees traded points before Ottawa closed the set, winning 25-23. 

The second set saw a tie at 8-8, and then again at 11-11. The Lakers then scored five in a row to lead 16-11. Ottawa climbed back into the set but the Lakers eventually took a 21-15 lead. Nipissing the sealed the deal with five of the final six points, winning 25-18. 

In the third, the score was an 8-7 Nipissing lead before Ottawa took seven straight points to lead 14-8. The Lakers responded, scoring six in a row to tie things at 15. Ottawa then led 20-18 before Nipissing score five points in a row to lead 23-20. Ottawa would try to fight back into the set but the lead was too large for the Gee-Gees. Nipissing won 25-23 and led 2-1. 

The fourth set saw the Lakers jump to a 5-1 lead. The lead grew to 11-6 for Nipissing before Ottawa rallied to trail by just a point. Ottawa then tied things at 12 before scoring five points in a row to lead 17-13. The Gee-Gees took another five of six points to lead 22-15 and closed the set 25-16 soon thereafter. 

The fifth and final set saw Nipissing win an amazing 10 points in a row! Kills by Oceane Raymond-Leduc, Ramanda Bell, and attacking errors from Ottawa gave Nipissing a large advantage. Ottawa would wake up and cut the Laker led to seven, but Nipissing made sure to finish the job, taking the fifth set 15-17 and winning the match 3-2. 

Oceane-Raymond Leduc led Nipissing with 18 kills. Anna Marie Horvat scored 12, and Elisabeth Spence added 7. Ramanda Bell and Cassie Robinson each served two aces in the win, and Horvat added one of her own. Maddy Lamothe contributed 35 assists. Raymond-Leduc and Spence each had 13 digs, and Jada Weir had 10. 

The win moves Nipissing Women's Volleyball to 6-11 this season. The Lakers are back in action Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2PM as the Ottawa Gee-Gees are the opponent.
