WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Lakers add outside hitter Rachel Gray

Gray played four OUA seasons with Western from 2020-2025

North Bay, Ontario – Nipissing Lakers Women's Volleyball is proud and excited to announce the signing of outside hitter Rachel Gray to the program for the 2026 season.

Gray, a native of London, Ontario, played OUA volleyball for the Western Mustangs from 2020-2025 while completing her undergraduate degree at the university. Prior to this, Gray played club volleyball at Forest City Volleyball Club from 2014-2020.

When asked to describe her strengths as a player, Gray said "my competitiveness, adaptability, and my ability to lead by example. I bring a strong work ethic to every practice and game. I'm always open to adjusting and doing whatever the team needs from me."

"I would describe my style as a team-first player. I value communication and supporting my teammates, and I always aim to contribute to a positive, fun, hard-working environment."

When asked about expectations, Gray said "I expect us to compete among the top teams in the OUA and consistently perform at a high level. I want to use my strengths to complement the talented athletes already on the roster and contribute in any way I can to help the team succeed. There is so much talent within this group, and I believe there is even more potential that has yet to be fully realized. I'm excited to be part of that process and to work together to help the team reach its full potential."

Rachel was voted a member of the OUA's Second All Star Team for the 2024-25 season. Gray was also named Western Women's Volleyball's Team MVP for 2024-25.

"We are excited to welcome Rachel to the Lakers family." said Lakers Women's Volleyball Head Coach Marc LaRochelle. "When Rachel reached out and we started discussing the possibility of her returning to the OUA in a Lakers uniform for her final season of eligibility it was very evident she was doing it for all the right reasons. Rachel has a team first mentality, walks into the gym and leads by example with her strong work ethic, competitive nature all while supporting and encouraging her teammates."

When asked why she chose Nipissing, Rachel said that Nipissing's great education program was a large factor. Gray also mentioned North Bay and Nipissing's campus as both beautiful locations to live and continue her education.

"When I originally choose to come to Nipissing, I was not intending on using my final year of eligibility. However, after meeting the team and getting to know the girls, it made my decision to try and use it very easy. They are an amazing group of athletes, and I can't wait to build stronger relationships with them."
