SUDBURY, Ont. — September 13, 2026 — The Nipissing Lakers cross-country team opened its 2026 racing season with a strong performance Sunday at the Laurentian Open and Ramsey Tour 5K in Sudbury.
Racing in near-perfect conditions — 12°C and partly sunny — the Lakers took on a deep field featuring athletes from Laurentian University and Cambrian College, along with Track North Athletic Club, high school runners from Sudbury and North Bay, North Bay Legion athletes, and community competitors.
The five-kilometre course provided an early-season test of both speed and strength. The race began on the road with a fast downhill opening before moving over a mixture of road and gravel trail and eventually returning to Laurentian University Stadium for a fast finish on the track.
The Lakers were aggressive from the gun, lining up across the front row and establishing themselves near the front during the quick opening section.
On the men's side, Kelly Thompson led the way with an outstanding sixth-place finish in 16:21, averaging approximately 3:16 per kilometre. Thompson stayed in the mix near the front throughout the race and was the first Laker across the line. His performance placed him behind three Laurentian runners and two unattached athletes in a highly competitive lead group.
Behind Thompson, the Lakers showed impressive depth. Nathan Hussell produced a major personal best, breaking 17 minutes with a 16:58 performance to finish 19th overall. Adam Edwards was right behind him, placing 20th in 17:02, giving Nipissing three runners among the first 20 finishers. Nicholas Ludgate followed in 22nd at 17:21, while Sam Bennett placed 27th in 17:49.
One of the best finishes of the day came between Lakers teammates Nolan Kenny and Sawyer Clarke. The two came charging onto the track together, with Kenny out-sprinting Clarke at the line. Kenny finished 31st in 18:09, with Clarke just one second behind in 18:10. Cooper Legler rounded out the Lakers men's contingent in 38th place with a time of 19:06.
The Lakers women were led by a breakthrough performance from Mackenzie Green.
After leading the Nipissing women through the fast opening section, Green delivered a big personal best of 19:28, breaking the 20-minute barrier and averaging approximately 3:54/km. She finished 44th overall in the combined men's and women's field and was the third university woman across the line, behind Laurentian's Kylee Fowler and unattached runner Kristen Mrozewski.
Jillian Daguerre was Nipissing's second woman, finishing in 21:00, followed closely by Violet Humphries in 21:13 and Charlotte Ailey in 21:30.
Hazel Craig crossed the line in 22:41, while Kikiana Tsuruta finished in 22:53. Nina-Rose Di Lello completed the Lakers women's results with a 23:34 performance.
Overall, the season opener provided plenty of positives for the Lakers: strong performances at the front of both fields, considerable depth through the men's lineup, breakthrough personal bests from Hussell and Green, and some excellent head-to-head racing throughout the squad.
With 15 Lakers completing the 5K, the Laurentian Open provided an excellent first benchmark for the 2026 season and an opportunity for the team to test its early-season fitness before the next race, Western University Invitational on September 26.
