Aside from possibly the first set of their season opener at Lakehead, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team has hung around and been competitive in every set.
Unfortunately, they haven't been able to get over the hurdle and come away with their first win of the season, as they fell to the Queens Gaels Friday night on home court.
Like the other two matches before, the Lakers battled, but came away losing 3-0.
The Gaels were able to control much of the match, grabbing early leads and weathering the storm on a number of occasions to walk away with the win.
In the opening set, it was a 25-19 victory over Nipissing that got the match started.
The win set the tone of the match, where all three sets went quite similarly.
An almost identical second set, with the Lakers losing 25-18, saw spurts of dominating playing from Nipissing, but once again, it didn't sustain long enough for the Lakers to claim the victory.
In the final set, down a handful of points, Nipissing climbed back and made the score 20-18 late in the set, but that was as close as they would get, eventually dropping the final set 25-21.
Erika Lapierre had seven kills to lead the Lakers.
Annabelle Harvey and
Taylor Ley chipped in on the offence with five kills each, while
Christina Caruso added four.
Jade DeCoste picked up 16 assists for Nipissing.
The Lakers will look to crack the win column against the always tough RMC Paladins, who are one of the hardest working teams in the OUA.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the RJS Athletic Centre.
