Friday night the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team hit a speed bump on their road to the post-season.
Facing arguably the top team in the OUA, the Lakers fell in three sets to the Toronto Varsity Blues, the defending CIS champions and a team that has yet to lose through nine matches.
The Lakers fought back in each set and got better as the match went on, but Toronto was just too powerful as they continued their dominance over the OUA.
In the opening set, the Blues jumped all over the Lakers and took advantage of a quick start, they cruised to the 25-16 victory to set the tone for the match.
The difference seemed to be the technical timeout, as the Lakers trailed just 16-12 at that point, but Toronto took off and went on a 9-4 run to claim the win.
It was a similar story in the second, as the score was 10-9 Toronto, but after earning a point to make it 11-9, Toronto opened up their offence and built up a 20-13 advantage.
They finished things off winning 25-15.
In the third, the Lakers played strong defence and battled, but the Blues made sure the match wouldn't be extended, winning 25-13, built off an 8-0 run to begin the set.
The loss ended a three match winning streak for the Lakers, who are now 5-4 on the season.
Tracy Hammerton had seven kills,
Shayla Kessler had four and both
Erika Lapierre and
Victoria Willars had three for the Lakers offence tonight against Toronto.
Nipissing will hit the court against Ryerson Saturday night at 6pm, looking to get back into the win column.
