The stands erupted with cheers as the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball came out on fire at the women's volleyball home opener against the York Lions.
Both teams played tough but in the end, the Lakers came out victorious, grabbing win number one, 3-1 over the Lions.
Starting with a 5-0 lead in the first set, the women never gave up the lead until winning the first match 25-21.
Throughout the next set, the women kept us guessing, allowing the score to bounce back and forth. Nevertheless, winning the second set as well, 25-21.The third set carried on the battle of the second; score board back and forth.
York slowly came ahead but Nipissing kept pushing point for point, unfortunately losing the third set 26-24. The fourth set was as tough as the second and third.
Play back and forth, excellent rallies, won by both teams.Yet, again Nipissing came out on top reversing the score of the prior set and ending the game in the fourth match, 26-24.
Leading the way offensively for the Lakers was
Annabelle Harvey who picked up 15.5 points,
Olivia Robinson had 14.5,
Erika Lapierre had 11.5 and both
Shayla Kessler and Vic Willars added 11 each in the victory.
Cassie Dobson, making her debut at libero, had 23 digs and
Stephanie Armstrong earned 36 assists.
The Lakers will play next in Kingston against Queens, next Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against RMC on Sunday, Nov. 5.
