Two games in two nights went right down to the wire for the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team this weekend, as they hosted the UOIT Ridgebacks and Queens Gaels.
Friday night, the Lakers suffered a tough shootout loss to the Ridgebacks and Saturday, they fell in overtime to the Gaels by a final of 4-3.
The Lakers earned two points on the weekend, but were a shot away each game from making it two wins, so they will take away positives, but will be disappointed they were unable to grab the extra points available.
The teams traded goals all night.
Queens opened up the scoring in the first period and took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.
In the second, the Lakers tied the game thanks to
Erik Robichaud's tally early in the period.
Queens regained the lead, but once again, Nipissing fought back.
Deverick Otteryes scored to even the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Gaels, for the third time, grabbed a one goal lead, but the Lakers scored less than 20 seconds later to make it 3-3.
Jake Wright buried the puck to tie the game, forcing overtime.
Wright also had an assist, along with
Brody Morris' two,
Steve Deeg,
Matt Donnelly and Robichaud.
In the extra period, the Gaels would find the back of the net to take home the win and the extra point.
Brent Moran finished with 38 saves in the loss.
Nipissing is back in action next weekend on the road, taking on Brock and Guelph.
