The Nipissing Lakers used a gritty and determined effort to come away with a weekend split, on their first road trip, as they were in Kingston this past weekend.
The Lakers dropped Saturday's contest to the Queens Gaels 3-0, but bounced back Sunday and manage to grind out a five-set victory over RMC to move their overall record to 2-1 early in the season.
Saturday, Nipissing hung in there with a strong Queens team, losing sets 25-22, 25-20 and 25-16, suffering their first loss of the season.
Kathryn Gribbon led the Lakers attack with eight points, while
Annabelle Harvey and
Erika Lapierre each had 4.5 through three sets.
A day later, Nipissing responded with a solid effort, although they didn't make things easy on themselves.
The teams split the first four sets, with RMC winning the first and third sets, while Nipissing responded each time to win the second and fourth.
In the fifth and final set, the Lakers jumped on RMC early and fought their way to a 15-10 victory to claim the match 3-2 and grab their second win of the season.
Cassie Dobson led the way with 20 points,
Erika Lapierre had 17 and Shayla added 10 in the win.
Next up, the Lakers face Toronto at home Saturday night.
The match is set to begin at 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.
