WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS FALL TO GAELS, WINNING STREAK ENDS

The good news; the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team earned a weekend split. The bad news; their four match winning streak came to an end.

After holding on to defeat RMC Saturday afternoon, the Lakers dropped their second match of the weekend in straight sets to the Queens Gaels.

The teams traded points to begin the first set and the score read 6-6 early on.

Unfortunately after that point, Queens took control of the set.

The Lakers continued the set with a strong effort, but Queens kept up the pressure and took home the first set by a final of 25-14.

Nipissing steadily improved as the match progressed and things, much like the first set, was even through the early portion.

The score was 10-10 before Queen's once again took over and the score sat at 22-16. The Gaels finished things off in the second, winning 25-21.

Despite losing the second set, the Lakers still made the Gaels work for the match as Nipissing slowly began gaining on Queens.

In the third, the Lakers played with more poise and communication, as they tried to extend the match to a fourth set. The Lakers fought hard to stay in the game and were able to limit the Gaels attack early on.

The set stayed close, with no more than a handful of points separating the two teams throughout.

Nipissing trailed 19-15, but refused to go away and saw the score jump to 21-19.

With Queens up 24-21, the Lakers mounted a last ditch effort to comeback, closing the gap to 24-23, but the Gaels sealed the win.

Shayla Kessler led the way with 9.5 points, Annabelle Harvey had 6.5 and Erika Lapierre had five in Sunday's match.

Nipissing hits the road next weekend to face Toronto and Ryerson in Toronto.
