MEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS COME UP WITH A BIG EFFORT TO TOP MUSTANGS

Looking for a bounce back from a tough loss Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team put together an impressive and improved effort Saturday against the Western Mustangs.

The Lakers used a big second period, scoring four times, on their way to the 6-2 victory to even their record to 2-2-0.

It was another slow start for Nipissing, as they trailed 1-0 just over three minutes into the game.

Unlike Friday, however, they clamped down and limited the Mustangs chances for the rest of the period.

Down 1-0 after 20 minutes, the Lakers came out flying in the second, scoring a total of four times which included three power play goals.

Erik Robichaud tied the game early in the period, putting home his first of the season.

Colin Campbell continued his strong play, picking up the first assist, while Harrison Harper earned the other helper.

Gael Lubwele made it 2-1 Nipissing when he tallied a power play marker, standing on the doorstep.

Dan Desrochers and Kylor Wall earned assists on the go-ahead goal.

Nipissing picked up their second power play goal of the night when Brett Hargrave sniped home his second of the season, set up by Campbell, who now has three straight two point efforts.

Zach Moody was also in on the goal.

And to cap off a strong period, Wall blasted home his second of the year with two seconds left in the middle frame to give the Lakers a 4-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

Campbell drew his third assist of the game, along with Robichaud who grabbed his second point of the night.

Western answered early in the third period, cutting into the Lakers lead.

It didn't take long for Nipissing to regain their three goal advantage, as Dan Desrochers made it 5-2 two minutes after Western's goal.

Hargrave tucked the sixth Lakers goal into an empty-net with just under three minutes left in the game to seal the win.

Campbell picked up his fourth assist of the night and sixth point of the weekend, earning the helper.

The final score read 6-2 in favour of Nipissing thanks to a complete effort.

Domenic Graham was solid in his second start of the weekend, but was forced out due to an injury.
Talor Joseph came in for the final 13 minutes of the game, helping the Lakers to victory.

Combined, the two Nipissing goalies made 39 saves, while the Lakers fired 27 shots at the Western net.

Up next for the Lakers are a pair of road games, as they head to Laurier and Waterloo for their first road games of the regular season
