The Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team made it two wins in a row thanks to an impressive effort and straight sets victory over the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers played their best match of the young season, claiming a 3-0 victory, winning 25-15, 25-16 and 25-23.

With the win, Nipissing moves to 2-1 on the season and currently in a tie for fourth place in the competitive OUA East Division.

Despite the sweep, both teams played well, but the Lakers were able to take advantage of a few Lakehead miscues, as well as put together solid point streaks to take the win.

A prime example of this is in the first set, with the score 10- in favour of Nipissing, a good stretch saw them move to a 15-9 lead.

They led 16-13 at the technical timeout and really pushed towards the win to walk away with the 25-15 triumph.

A similar story in the second set, as Nipissing built up a 16-7 lead at the technical timeout and made quick work of Lakehead, winning 25-16 to move ahead 2-0 in the match and take control.

In the third, with a chance to make short work of their opponents, the Lakers came out strong and held the lead for much of the set.

They were up 16-8 at the midway point of the set, but Lakehead refused to quit and pushed back.

The score was tied 21-21 late in the set before Nipissing outlasted the visitors to take home the final set and the match.

Shayla Kessler led the Lakers attack with 8.5 points, Madison Murphy had 7.5 and Shaelyn Francis and Megan Winter chipped in with seven apiece in the victory.

The Lakers hit the road next weekend and head to Kingston to face RMC and Queens Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
