Box Score 2 Exciting would be a good word to describe the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball weekend, as they earned a split in Kingston.
Saturday, Nipissing erased a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets and defeat the RMC Paladins, but Sunday, the Queens Gaels topped the Lakers in four sets and halted Nipissing's three match winning streak.
They didn't do it the easy way in the first match of the weekend after losing 25-19 and 25-18 to the Paladins before storming back.
After going down by two, Nipissing claimed wins of 25-21, 25-22 and 15-13 – coming back from being down 12-9 in the fifth set to pick up the win.
Shayla Kessler and
Shannon Lebreux each had 12 kills to lead the way,
Madison Murphy added nine and
Stephanie Armstrong had 20 assists in the thrilling victory.
Looking to build off the momentum of the five set win the day before, the Lakers faced the Gaels to close out the weekend.
Queens was able to take the victory, defeating the Lakers in four sets, three of which were very close and could have gone either way.
The teams split the first two sets; Queens took the first 26-24, Nipissing won 27-25 in the second, but the Gaels claimed the next two, 25-20 and 25-10 to take the match.
Olivia Robinson was strong, picking up 10 kills, Kessler added nine and both Lebreux and
Shaelyn Francis had six.
The Lakers return home to close out the first semester of play, as they welcome the Toronto Varsity Blues to town Friday night and the Ryerson Rams Saturday night.
Both matches are set for 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.
