One sign of a good team is not allowing any loss to snowball into a losing streak.
The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team has been good at that lately and proved it this weekend, picking up a 4-2 win on the road Sunday, just two days after suffering their first loss in five games.
Nipissing doubled up their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs thanks to a big second period.
After trailing 1-0 through 20 minutes, the Lakers exploded for three goals in the middle frame.
First, it was
Jetta Derenoski finding the back of the net on the power play – her fourth goal in the past three games.
Maria Dominico and
Kaley Tienhaara picked up helpers on the goal.
Less than two minutes later Dominico gave Nipissing the lead, set up by
Jade Gauthier and
Zosia Davis.
And with less than two minutes to go in the period,
Hunter Mosher potted what turned out to be the game-winner, with Davis and
Ava Keis picking up assists.
Leading 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Voyageurs cut into the Lakers lead just over five minutes into the third period to make it an interesting finish, but
Keara Amson put the game away four minutes later.
Amson potted her first career OUA, assisted by
Bronwyn Bolduc, to seal the win and give Nipissing the weekend split and four of six points.
With the victory, the Lakers move into top spot in the OUA.
Danika Ranger finished with 18 saves on 20 shots for the win, while Nipissing fired 25 shots at the Laurentian net.
The Lakers sit with a record of 9-3-1 after the first semester of play.
They'll be back in action January 4 and 5 on home ice.
