It looked as if the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team wanted to work off some of the turkey they had over the Christmas break, as they decided to play a little extra hockey Friday night.
The Lakers, back in action for the first time in 2019, came away with a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory over the visiting Waterloo Warriors Friday night at Memorial Gardens.
Nipissing started the game off very strong, scoring just a minute into the contest.
Jade Gauthier, set up by
Sam Strassburger, put Nipissing up 1-0.
Before the midway part of the first, Waterloo tied the game.
In the second, the Lakers regained the lead as
Brianna Gaffney fired home her fourth of the season.
Melissa Tolton and
Kaley Tienhaara drew helpers on the go-ahead goal.
Waterloo once again evened things up by scoring just 20 seconds into the third period sending the game to overtime.
The extra frame solved nothing and the game went to a shootout.
Goals by Gauthier and Tienhaara and two saves by
Mercedes Chircop, who came in during the third period, secured the extra point for Nipissing and gave them their 10th win of the season.
Nipissing hosts Laurier Saturday night at 7:30pm at Memorial Gardens.
