It may be early in the season, but that was a big win for the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team.
The Lakers improved their record to 1-1 thanks to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Trent Excalibur Saturday afternoon at the RJS Athletic Centre.
The teams split the first two sets before the Lakers took control of the match and earned the win, winning sets three and four.
Nipissing got off to a strong start in the opening set and held a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout.
The Lakers pushed their advantage to 20-15 late in the set before cruising to the 25-20 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
Trent responded in the second set, answering Nipissing's win.
It was Nipissing, however, that started strong, as they led 8-5 early, but trailed 16-14 at the technical timeout.
Nipissing was playing catch up for most of the set, down 21-18 late before falling 25-20.
With the match tied 1-1, the Lakers took over.
In the third set, Nipissing played their way to a 16-11 advantage at the technical timeout and came away with a 25-18 victory in the set to push Trent to the brink of a loss.
Nipissing would make no mistakes wrapping up the match in the fourth set.
They came out flying, leading 5-0 early and 16-7 at the technical timeout.
From there, they cruised their way to a 20-15 cushion and finished things off in style, winning the fourth set 25-17 to claim the match.
Megan Winter had a monster game picking up 18.5 points,
Shayla Kessler was solid picking up 13 and
Madison Murphy added 12.
Stephanie Armstrong finished with 44 assists in the victory.
Nipissing will remain at home, hosting the Lakehead Thunderwolves next Saturday in their final of three straight home matches.
Game time is set for noon at the RJS Athletic Centre.
