It's early in the season, but the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team picked up a big win and three key points in the standings Friday night.
The Lakers edged their arch-rival Laurentian Voyageurs 1-0 in the first leg of the Riley Gallo Cup and the 705 Challenge Cup thanks to an early goal in the second half.
Nipissing now sits at 3-1-1 and has kicked off the season in style.
Andrea Young continued her hot start scoring the lone goal of the game at the 47-minute mark.
Madison Logan picked up the assist on the goal, as the team's two top scorers combined to give Nipissing the victory.
From there, Nipissing held on to the lead and claimed the victory.
Mykaela Volpe was very good in net, recording another clean sheet, finishing with nine saves.
Nipissing will now head to Sudbury for the rematch on Sunday afternoon, as the northern rivalry continues.
Game time is set for Noon at Laurentian University.
