Coming off a convincing win Saturday afternoon, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team wrapped up their weekend against the talented Queens Gaels Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels, like the Lakers, were coming off a victory in their season opener.

A strong start set the tone for the match for Queens and kept the Lakers on their heels and Nipissing was unable to recover, falling 3-0 to finish the weekend with a split.

In the opening set, Queens controlled the pace and dominated the service game, building up an 18-12 lead, extending it to 20-14 before closing things out.

The final read 25-14 to give the Gaels the lead.

Nipissing was better in the second set, but still found themselves down 11-6 early on and 16-6 at the technical timeout.

The Lakers fought back and hung around, down 20-12 late.

They closed the gap to five, but the deficit was a little too much to overcome, as the Gaels took the second set 25-16.

In the third set, down 2-0, the Lakers battled to stay alive.

Nipissing played their best volleyball in what turned out to be the final set and forced Queens to raise their game.

The Lakers got off to a quick start, up 3-2 and trailed by just one, 16-15, at the technical timeout.

Nipissing held a 20-19 lead before the Gaels took back the advantage and led 23-22.

The teams continued to trade points with the Lakers up 25-24 before the Gaels stormed back to claim the set 28-26 and take the match.

Shayla Kessler led the attack with seven points, Shannon Lebreux added 6.5 and Madison Murphy had five in Sunday's contest.

Up next, the Lakers will host the Ryerson Rams Friday night at 6pm at the Surtees Athletic Centre before hitting the road Sunday to take on the Trent Excalibur in Peterborough.
