WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS COMPLETE COMEBACK TO END THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE

Looking to end the season on a high note, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team hosted the Trent Excalibur Sunday afternoon.

The match went the distance, as the Lakers needed five sets, but they came away with a gutsy victory to end the year with a 3-2 win over Trent.

In the opening set, the Lakers got off to a strong start, 7-3 early on.

Trent fought back, however, and the teams were tied 10-10 as the Excalibur flipped the script and outscored the Lakers 7-3.

Nipissing would regain command of the first set, going up 19-15.

The teams traded points and Nipissing continued to lead late in the set, up 22-18.

Thanks to their early advantage, the Lakers picked up a 25-20 win in the first set, getting off to a strong start in the season finale.

In the second set, the Excalibur bounced back and grabbed an early lead, going up 6-4.

From there, they built up a 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout, but the lead didn't last long.

Nipissing responded and took a 20-18 lead late in the set and pushed their cushion to 23-22.

Trent refused to go away, however, as they fought and turned the match around to claim the set and even up the match.

Trent continued their strong play in the third set, eventually picking up the win.

They grabbed an early 8-7 lead and pushed their advantage to 16-12 at the technical timeout in Set 3.

Nipissing wasn't able to muster much in the way of offence, down 20-14 and falling 25-16 in the set, going down 2-1 in the match.

Looking to stay alive in the fourth set, the Lakers continued to battle and worked their way to an 18-17 lead late in the fourth set.

They weathered a late push by the Excalibur, stayed ahead by a few points in the final stretch of the set and came away with a 25-21 win to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, the Lakers made sure their comeback bid wasn't going to fall short.

Nipissing started off strong, building up a 5-1 lead.

They extended that advantage to 8-2 at the technical timeout as the teams switched sides and from there, the Lakers took care of business.

The Lakers made it 11-3 and finally took home the fifth set 15-7 to cap off the season with a win.

Shayla Kessler capped off her career with 20 kills in the match, Averi Bodnar had 13 and Vanessa Arbour added six in the contest.

With Sunday's match completed, that does it for the 2019-20 season for the Lakers.
