MEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS DROP A PAIR IN OTTAWA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team had a tough weekend in front of them to begin the 2022-23 OUA season.

The Lakers hit the road, taking on the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens to begin the year and unfortunately, came out on the wrong side of both contests.

Friday, the Lakers dropped a 6-2 decision to the Gee Gees and followed that up with an 8-3 loss to the Ravens Saturday to close out the opening weekend.

To begin the weekend, the Lakers came out a bit slow and trailed 1-0 after the opening period, but slipped in the middle frame and ended up down 4-0 after 40 minutes.

With the score 5-0 Gee Gees, the Lakers got on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net twice.

Max Griffioen and Jacob Collins tallied for the Lakers before the Gee Gees sealed the win with a late goal.

Saturday, the teams combined for six goals in the opening frame, with the Ravens building up a 4-2 lead after just 20 minutes.

Nipissing opened up the scoring early on with Harrison Caines – who had two points – finding the back of the net on the power play.

Carleton replied with three goals before the teams traded late markers.

Charles Farmer scored with about five minutes left in the period before the Ravens answered once again.

After the dust settled, it was 4-2 early on.

The Ravens extended their lead to 7-2 after 40 minutes with three goals in the middle frame before the teams traded tallies in the third.

Pascal Valcourt scored – one of his two points on the weekend – for the Lakers late to round out the scoring in the loss.

Up next, the Lakers host the UQTR Patriotes for a pair of games this weekend.

Friday night, puck drop is set for 7:30pm and on Saturday, the game begins at 3:30pm, at Memorial Gardens.
