MEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS FALL TO GEE GEES TO CLOSE OUT THE WEEKEND

Box Score Wrapping up their weekend and in the middle of a four game homestand, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team was looking to pick up their second victory of the season.

The Lakers faced the Ottawa Gee Gees Sunday night at Memorial Gardens, looking to bounce back from a loss Saturday to Carleton, as well as a defeat earlier in the year at the hands of the Gee Gees.

Unfortunately, the Lakers weren't able to find their way back into the win column, falling 5-1 to the Gee Gees.

In the opening period, the teams traded chances and each had some pressure with the man advantage, but neither team found the back of the net until late in the frame.

With less than three minutes to go, the teams combined for three goals.

The Gee Gees tallied twice in 16 seconds with just under three to go, going up 2-0 quickly.

Nipissing answered with one minute left in the period, as Mathieu Franche found the back of the net to cut the Lakers deficit in half.

Parker Bowman and Brady Lynn earned assists on the goal.

The flurry of goals ended the opening period, where the Gee Gees led 2-1 and outshot Nipissing 13-10.

In the second, more shots and chances at both ends, but it was once again the Gee Gees being rewarded.

They regained their two goal lead just before the midway point of the middle frame.

The Gee Gees kept the pressure on, adding a fourth goal with 8:27 remaining in the period.

Ottawa took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission break and held a 29-15 advantage in the shot department.

In the third, the Gee Gees tacked on to their lead with a power play marker with just five minutes left in the period.

With the late goal, the Gee Gees cruised to the victory.

Zach Roy finished with 30 saves, while the Lakers had 21 shots of their own.

Next for the Lakers is a doubleheader against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

The Ridgebacks are in town Friday and Saturday night as part of Nipissing University's Homecoming weekend.
