Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team picked up a key four points this past weekend, as they look to make their return to the post-season.
The Lakers defeated the RMC Paladins twice – 2-1 in overtime Friday night and 7-3 Saturday – as they improve to 6-5-0 on the season.
With the two wins, Nipissing is now 4-2-0 on home ice and a perfect 2-0 in overtime.
In the first contest of the weekend, the Lakers used a power play goal by
Jacob Hickey in the extra period to grab the victory and second point.
The teams traded goals in the opening period, as
Pascal Valcourt found the back of the net early on to give Nipissing a 1-0 lead.
Max Griffioen and
Mathieu Franche earned helpers on the tally.
RMC replied about three minutes later to tie the game, as the score would remain 1-1 until overtime.
In the extra frame, Hickey – setup by
Jacob Collins and
Matt Paul – would give the Lakers the win.
Michael Herringer made 28 saves for his first win with the Lakers, while Nipissing fired 34 shots at the Paladins net.
In the second game of the weekend, Nipissing wouldn't allow the Paladins to keep the game close, as they posted seven goals en route to the lopsided victory.
The Lakers would build up a 6-0 lead through 41 minutes, before cruising to the win and their third straight victory.
Devyn Mayea, Valcourt and Paul all scored in the first period.
Gael Lubwele would score his first of two and the eventual game-winner in the middle frame, before his second tally, along with
Parker Bowman and
Brock Welsh would score in the final frame.
Hickey and
Elias Lieffers each had two assists and Mayea, Valcourt and Paul all had two-point nights.
Francis Asselin grabbed the win, as Nipissing outshot RMC 40-31.
Next up, the Lakers host Ontario Tech on Wednesday night at Memorial Gardens.
Game time is set for 7pm.
