The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team had a solid weekend, earning a split on the road, earning their first win of the season in the process.
The Lakers picked up a 5-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons Friday night before falling 4-2 Saturday evening to cap off the first road trip of the weekend.
Friday, after a scoreless first, the offence kicked into high gear in the middle frame.
Frank Jenkins scored the first of his two goals to begin the flurry as he notched his first OUA goal, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Guelph replied late in the period before the Lakers scored twice in the final 30 seconds of the period.
Charlie Johnson and
Charles Farmer scored 24 seconds apart to give Nipissing a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
David Campbell,
Tyson Tomasini, Farmer, Johnson and a pair of assists by
Payton Vescio all led the offence.
Up 3-1, Johnson and Jenkins each scored their second of the game in the third to put the game away and earn two points.
Elias Lieffers,
Benjamin Brunette, Will Larsen and
Chad Denault all grabbed assists in the final period.
Reece Proulx was very good in net, finishing with 32 saves.
Saturday, the Gryphons jumped out to a quick 2-1 in the lead in the first, with Tomasini burying the Lakers goal.
Nipissing tied things up as Vescio continued his strong start, finding the back of the net on the power play.
The Gryphons scored 13 seconds later to take the lead and again late to seal the win.
Johnson and Larsen assisted on Tomasini's goal, while Caines had the helper on Vescio's goal.
Zach Roy made 25 saves in the contest.
Nipissing is back on the road this weekend as they face the Brock Badgers twice – Friday and Saturday – in St. Catharines.
