After waiting a bit longer for their chance to hit the pitch in the OUA Playoffs, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team hit the field Wednesday night at home.
Facing the Queen's Gaels, who defeated Carleton in Round 1, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals on Saturday, the Lakers were looking for some revenge after being eliminated by the Gaels in 2023.
The Lakers completed a comeback for the ages, erasing a 4-2 deficit and storming back to earn a 6-4 win, eliminating the Gaels and advancing to Round 3 of the OUA Playoffs.
And the first half did not disappoint.
The teams combined for four goals in the opening 45 minutes, with the Gaels taking the lead twice before Nipissing replied.
Queen's went up 1-0 thanks to a goal at 13:55, but their lead wouldn't last long.
Jessica Emmerton absolutely crushed a shot for outside the 18-yard box, putting into the top corner on the far side to make it 1-1.
Three minutes later, the Gaels regained their lead and held on to their advantage until the half-hour mark.
Emmerton continued her impressive half and scored her second of game to even things up at 2-2, sending the teams to the halftime break deadlocked.
In the second half, things got even crazier.
With the score tied 2-2, Queen's buried a goal early in the second half, wasting little time grabbing their third lead of the game.
Six minutes after that, they doubled their lead and made it 4-2, looking to be in complete control of the contest.
The Lakers had other plans.
At the 67-minute mark,
Cassidy Brooks grabbed momentum back, cutting the Lakers deficit to just one goal.
Six minutes later, Emmerton completed her hat-trick, tying the game as the Lakers took over and pushed for the winner.
Nothing was decided in 90 minutes and the game went to extra time.
In the first extra half,
Rylee Traicoff made no mistake on a penalty kick, putting Nipissing up 5-4 – their first lead of the game.
The Lakers weren't done there either, as
Bella Nolte sealed the comeback victory, scoring in the 109th minute to make ait a 6-4 game and give Nipissing the win, sending them to the OUA semi-finals.
Nipissing will now face the Western Mustangs or York Lions in the semi-finals, set for Saturday.
