The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team was hoping to make it two wins in a row and complete a perfect weekend when they hit the ice Saturday night.
After a very solid 4-1 win Friday night over the Laurier Golden Hawks, the two teams were back at it a night later to wrap up the weekend.
It took a comeback and some extra time, but the Lakers completed a perfect weekend, defeating Laurier 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.
The first 20 minutes didn't see much in the way of offence with only a few chances
Early in the second, the Golden Hawks struck first, scoring on a shot from the slot after a fortunate bounce.
With exactly 13 minutes remaining in the middle frame, Laurier doubled their lead, making it 2-0 as they scored thanks to a rebound.
The Lakers would get on the board shortly after as
Charles Farmer buried a power play marker to cut his team's deficit to just one goal.
Devyn Mayea and
David Campbell gabbed assists on the goal.
Laurier would regain their two-goal lead on a power play marker of their own, making it 3-1 with 9:07 left in the second.
After some strong play in their own end, the Lakers broke out on a great passing play with
Harrison Caines and
Jonathan Rees who sprung
Noah Vom Scheidt.
Vom Scheidt make a perfect deke for his second goal of the weekend, cutting into the Hawks lead and making it 3-2.
Despite an edge in shots, the Lakers headed to the dressing room after 40 minutes down by a goal, 3-2.
In the third, nine minutes in, the Lakers tied things up thanks to a perfect shot by Farmer and some nice passing by the Lakers.
Charlie Johnson and Mayea setup the tying goal for the Lakers.
Both teams came close late, but neither could find the winner and the game headed to overtime, with each team grabbing one point, looking for a second.
After being down two goals early, the Lakers came all the way back as their captain finished things off in style, scoring a highlight reel goal, as Mayea one-timed the winner home.
Johnson made a perfect feed to finish off the 2-on-1 after a breakout pass from Caines gave the Lakers an odd-man rush.
Zach Roy made some key saves and 24 overall for the victory.
Nipissing is back in action next weekend when they hit the road and travel to take on the York Lions in Toronto.
