Wrapping up the first half of the season, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team took on the Laurentian Voyageurs Wednesday night.
With both teams looking to finish 2024 strong and gain momentum heading into the break, the two teams played a very competitive game.
A back and forth affair saw the Lakers grind out a 57-52 win over the Vees, finishing 2024 on a positive note.
A fast-paced opening quarter saw the Lakers out in front 12-9 midway through and they held on to the lead after 10 minutes, grabbing a16-14 advantage.
In the second, Nipissing started strong, outscoring the Vees 9-4 as they added to their lead.
A very impressive 20 minutes, the Lakers were in control, leading 35-24 over the Laurentian.
In the second half, Laurentian pushed back, but Nipissing still managed to stay out in front, leading by 10 midway through the third quarter.
A late push by the Vees saw them climb back into the game and cut the Lakers lead to just five after 30 minutes.
Heading to the fourth, the Lakers held on to a 41-36 advantage.
After outscoring the Lakers in the third, the Vees took the lead, forcing Nipissing to storm back late in the game.
The Lakers were clutch down the stretch and pulled out the victory thanks to some strong shooting and tight defence.
Taryn Gauthier had a big game with 17 points and
Dominique Bouchard added 14 in the Lakers victory.
Nipissing is back in action early in January.
