Coming off a strong showing Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team was back in action in a pivotal game Sunday afternoon.
The two teams – the Lakers and visiting Ottawa Gee Gees – both entered the contest with 4-0 record in a showdown for first place in the OUA East Division.
As expected, the game came down to the wire, with a second half penalty kick goal deciding the game, as Ottawa snuck out a 2-1 win over the Lakers.
The Gee Gees struck first after early pressure and chances.
A loose ball found the foot of their dangerous striker, Cassandra Provost, who made no mistake putting Ottawa up 1-0.
Not long after the game's opening goal, Lakers veteran
Taylor Schell buried a shot into the top of the net to even the game.
After 45 minutes, the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second half, the teams proved why they are two of the top teams in the OUA.
It was a playoff-type game down the stretch, with the deciding goal coming off of a penalty kick from the Gee Gees.
A late push saw the Lakers come close and generate chances in the final few minutes, but they were unable to find the equalizer and came up a goal short.
Next up, the Lakers host the Trent and Excalibur and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks as part of the Nipissing Homecoming weekend.
Game times are set for noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
