Waterloo, ON – Nipissing Women's Basketball got the job done in a big way this weekend, winning 2 games on the road against the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks, back-to-back.
Friday, November 7th, the Lakers took down the Warriors 66-47 to pick up their first win of the season. Taryn Gauthier and Nicole Budd each scored 17 points in the victory. Dominique Bouchard and Sophie Milner added 7 apiece, while Avery Walker and Avery Miller added 5 each.
Sophie Milner was also a force defensively, grabbing 11 rebounds and 2 steals in the win. Nicole Budd contributed 6 rebounds and 2 steals and went 6/7 from the free throw line.
The Lakers held the Warriors to under 50 points in the match, putting a bow on a great defensive performance and marking the first time this season the Lakers limited their opponent to less than 50 points in a game.
Then, Saturday, November 8th, the Lakers took on the Laurier Golden Hawks in the second half of the back-to-back. The Lakers had another strong showing and grabbed another win 78-56 over Laurier.
Katelyn DeCook scored 17 points in the win, going 5/9 in field goal shooting and 6/8 in free throws. DeCook also grabbed 10 rebounds for Nipissing and had 1 steal. Taryn Gauthier added another 17 points in the win and stole the ball twice. Sophie Milner scored 12, Dominique Bouchard contributed 11, Nicole Budd had 9, and Avery Walker added 8.
Milner added 9 rebounds, while Nicole Budd had 8.
The Lakers exploded for 24 points in the second quarter while only allowing Laurier to score 8. This ended up being the difference in the game as Nipissing continued to roll forward in the second half, and Laurier was unable to recover from the deficit.
Nipissing Women's Basketball now sits 2-4 on the season after their 2 wins in Waterloo. The team is back in action this weekend with two home games at RJS Athletics Centre.
Friday, November 14th, the Lakers will take on Ontario Tech at 6pm, and Saturday, November 15th, the Queen's Gaels will be the opponent at 4pm.
