North Bay, ON – Nipissing Women's Basketball suffered a loss at home to the Queen's Gaels, losing 84-65.
The Gaels started the game strong, taking a 9-4 lead under 5 minutes into the quarter. Nipissing countered and brought the game back to an 11-10 deficit. Nicole Budd of the Lakers scored a team-high 5 in the quarter, followed by Avery Miller contributing 4 free throws off the bench. Queen's three-point shooting proved lethal, and the Gaels took a 22-15 after 10 minutes of play.
The Lakers fought back quickly in the second quarter, to keep the Gaels' lead within reach. Sophie Milner made a clutch 3 pointer at 6:48 to cut the Queen's lead to 3. The teams traded baskets with each other before Taryn Gauthier gave the lakers a 30-29 lead with 3:34 left in the half. The half would end 34-32 in favour of the Gaels.
The third quarter is where things took a turn, as Queen's took advantage of Nipissing and scored 33 in the quarter. The Lakers only managed 13 points as Queen's controlled both ends of the floor. Nicole Budd had 5, Taryn Gauthier had 4, and Dominique Bouchard also scored 4 in the third quarter.
The Lakers outscored the Gaels 20-17 in the final quarter of the game, showing fight and that they wouldn't be backed down and go quietly. A balanced attack saw all 5 Lakers starters score, Taryn Gauthier's 5 points leading the way. The charge was not enough, however, as Queen's finished the game scoring lots from beyond the arc, and took home the win.
Nicole Budd lead the Lakers with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal. Taryn Gauthier shot 6/9 from the field, including 2/3 from 3-point range, scoring 14 points and adding 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Dominique Bouchard added 8 points, 3 assists and 1 steal.
For Nipissing, the loss snaps their 3-game winning streak and moves their record to 3-5 on the season.
The Lakers are back in action Wednesday, November 19th, taking on the Laurentian Voyageurs at RJS Athletic Centre in North Bay. Tip-off is 6PM.
