North Bay, ON – The Nipissing Lakers Men's Hockey team came up short in their effort against the Ottawa GeeGees, losing 5-2 on November 1.
Ottawa opened the scoring at 3:30 in the first period, as Andrew Belchamber recorded his 5th of the season. The GeeGees struck again at 13:20 as Alexis Daviault found the back of the net, and again on the power play at 15:20 from Elliot Dutil.
However, the Lakers got on the board shortly thereafter as Noah Vom Scheidt recorded his 5th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Danny Akkouche. Nipissing finished the first period down 3-1.
The second period produced no scoring for either squad. Four minor penalties were had in the middle frame, with Nipissing being responsible for three. The Lakers penalty kill proved to be very effective, killing off 6 minutes of power play time for the GeeGees and keeping the deficit just two goals.
The Lakers broke through at 2:59 of the third period as Markas Samenas scored his 3rd goal of the season, cutting Ottawa's lead to a single goal. Assists on the goal belonged to Nipissing's David Campbell.
Nipissing found themselves on the penalty kill at the 7-minute mark of the third, having to kill an Ottawa 5 on 3 power play for 1:21. Nipissing showed great poise and killed both penalties in impressive fashion, bringing the game back to 5 on 5 even strength.
Unfortunately, on a Nipissing power play at 13:05, Ottawa was able to net 2 shorthanded goals, one at 13:48 and another at 14:28, to take a three-goal lead, 5-2.
Nipissing did have one more full power play chance at 17:31 of the third but were unable to convert.
Nipissing managed 24 shots in the contest, while Ottawa directed 34 shots on net.
Nipissing goalie Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 29/34 shots in the loss.
The Lakers were scoreless on the man-advantage (0/6), while Ottawa converted on 1/6 chances.
After this weekend's results, Nipissing now sits at a 5-4-0 record this season, 3-2-0 at home.
