North Bay, ON – Lakers Women's Basketball scored an impressive victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Shoot for the Cure night on Friday, January 16th, winning 71-33 at RJS Athletic Centre.
The Lakers won the first quarter 16-13, led by Taryn Gauthier who had 6 in the opening frame. Katelyn DeCook scored 4, and Sophie Milner and Nicole Budd each added 2 for Nipissing. The Lakers lead 8-2 before Algoma arrived in the game and took an 11-10 lead. Ella Adams restored the Lakers lead at 14-11, and Gauthier's layup gave Nipissing a three-point lead heading to the second.
The second quarter is where the Lakers took control of the game, outscoring Algoma 23-6. The Lakers started the quarter scoring 16 unanswered points, taking a 32-13 lead. Algoma would score 4 points in off of free throws and a made-jump shot, but Nipissing would continue their scoring ways, leading 39-19 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lakers would pace Algoma 22-5 to take a 61-24 lead. Brooke Cardinal scored a three-pointer and added another jump shot to help the Lakers grow their lead.
The fourth quarter was a slower pace of scoring, as Algoma outscored the Lakers 11-10 in the final frame. Avery Walker and Brooke Cardinal scored a jump-shot each, as the Lakers cruised to a 71-35 win.
Katelyn DeCook led the Lakers with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists in the win. Taryn Gauthier scored 14 and added 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. Nicole Budd had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in the win. Sophie Milner potted 8 and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. Brooke Cardinal scored 8 points off the bench and added 2 rebounds and a steal.
The win moves the Lakers to 4-10 on the season. Nipissing Women's Basketball is back in action Saturday, January 17th at 4PM when the McMaster Marauders pay a visit to RJS Athletic Centre. Watch the action live on OUA.tv.
