WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Lakers wrap up regular season schedule

Windsor/London, ON – Nipissing Lakers Women's Hockey were on the road this past weekend in Southwestern Ontario for two games to end their regular season schedule.

Friday, Feb. 13, the Lakers took on the Windsor Lancers in their second matchup of the season.

Windsor opened the scoring at 10:18 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Nipissing did not score on their one power play chance at 12:26 and trailed by one after 20 minutes.

In the second, Windsor scored at 3:52, 4:37, 7:35, and 18:11 to lead 5-0. Nipissing couldn't capitalize on another power play chance, this one coming at 11:53 of the second, and trailed by five after 40 minutes.

No goals were scored in the final frame, and Nipissing lost the game 5-0.

Lakers netminder Allie Lehmann allowed four goals on 17 shots before Jordan Sladics entered the game in relief. Sladics stopped 15 of 16 shots in the remainder of the game.

Then, on Saturday, Feb. 14, the Lakers travelled to London to face the Western Mustangs in their regular season finale.

Western got on the board first at 6:56, and then again at 10:22 to take a 2-0 lead. Nipissing failed to score in the opening frame and trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Western scored a power play goal at 0:30 of the second period to lead 3-0. Then, it was Nipissing's Jill Hennessy who scored a power play goal for the Lakers at 7:40. Hennessy added another goal at 10:23, as the Lakers now only trailed by a single goal. Western would score two minutes later to regain a two-goal lead and add another power play tally at 18:02 to restore a three-goal advantage. Western led 5-2 after 40 minutes of play.

No goals were scored in the third period, and the Mustangs took the win, 5-2.

Nipissing goalie Jordan Sladics stopped 20 of 25 shots in the loss.

Women's Hockey ended their regular season schedule with a 10-10-6 record, good for 4th in the OUA's East division, meaning the Lakers are bound for the playoffs.

Nipissing will face off with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in a winner-advances play-in game this Friday, Feb. 20 at 9AM at West Ferris Arena in North Bay. The winner of this game will earn the right to play the Queen's Gaels in the first round of the McCaw Cup playoffs.
