WOMEN'S SOCCER: LATE GOALS SINK LAKERS

Brian Doherty Photo
In a game they had to have to have to help their post-season chances, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team was unable to come up with that extra gear.

Nipissing refused to quit and fought hard for the 90 minutes, but in the end, a strong Queens Gaels team was too much and the Lakers lost 3-1 in the second last game of the season.

The Gaels opened up the scoring in the first half with the only offence in the first 45 minutes.

The goal came at the 16th minute and was the only tally until the final 16 minutes, when the teams combined for three goals.

Trailing 1-0, Selena Innamorati tied the game in the 74th minute and it looked as if the Lakers would be able to make a late push, or at the very least, hold on for a single point.

The Gaels had other ideas, as they scored their second goal of the game just a minute later to regain the lead.

And to seal the win with the Lakers pushing, Queens scored in the 90th minute to put the game away and come away with the full three points.

Sitting with 18 points, Nipissing can catch Carleton in points, 21, but Carleton will face the Winless Trent Excalibur Sunday in their season finale.

There are still positions to be decided in the final day of play in OUA Women's Soccer.

Game time for the Lakers finale is noon Sunday in Kingston versus RMC.
