WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS PICK UP A FOUR POINT WEEKEND

Brian Doherty Photo
It was only three games, but the way the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was playing, there was a chance that they could extend their winning streak into double digits.

Unfortunately, the Lakers met the top ranked Queen's Gaels Saturday night and as both teams battled through 60-plus minutes, it was the Gaels that came away with the 3-2 overtime victory.

Coming off a 3-1 win Friday, Nipissing was hoping to make it a perfect six points weekend, but instead had to settle for four - a regulation win and an ovetime loss.

After a scoreless first period, things picked up in the middle period, with the teams scoring three goals.

Queens opened up the scoring early on a power play as the puck made its way to a wide open Gaels forward who had a big chunk of the net to shoot at as Lakers goalie Jackie Rochefort was focused on a scramble just in front of the blue paint.

The score would remain 1-0 Gaels until the final three minutes of the period when the Lakers would not only tie it, but take the lead.

Brooklyn Irwin did a great job in front of the net battling for position and tapped home a loose puck to tie things up.

And with about 40 seconds remaining on the clock, Sam Strassburger would put the Lakers in front, scoring her third of the season.

Kaley Tienhaara picked up an assist on Irwin's goal, while Strassburger's was unassisted.

Things stayed 2-1 Lakers until the dying seconds of the game when Nipissing was called for a penalty and the Gaels pulled their goalie, putting Queens up 6-on-4 for the final minute of the game.

They would sneak one past Rochefort to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra frame, less than a minute in, Queens received a fortunate bounce and tucked the puck past Rochefort to earn the victory and the extra point.

Rochefort stopped 35 shots on the night, while the Lakers fired 27 pucks towards the Gaels goal.

Nipissing (3-2-2) will return home for a pair of games this weekend, facing Western (3-1-0) Friday night and Windsor (0-3-1) Saturday evening.
