It's likely safe to say the Laurentian Voyageurs shocked the Nipissing Lakers when they claimed the win Saturday night and spoiled the Lakers home opener.
Entering the season, the Lakers had high hopes and have tonnes of potential, but they didn't get off to the start they would have liked.
A goal 1:13 into the overtime period saw the Vees escape North Bay with two points, while Nipissing will settle for just the single and overtime loss.
The Voyageurs opened up the scoring in the first period and took a 1-0 lead to the second intermission.
Second year forward
Bronwyn Bolduc tied the game around the midway point of the game, with her linemates
Kaley Tienhaara and
Sam Strassburger drawing assists on the goal.
After the teams traded chances in the third period, the game headed to the extra framed tied at one.
Just over a minute in, however, the Vees picked up the win as they slid the puck past Lakers goalie
Jackie Rochefort, who made 26 saves in taking the loss.
The Lakers fired 20 shots toward the Laurentian net.
Nipissing will try to get back on track next weekend, hosting two more home games – Friday versus Waterloo at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. against Laurier.
Both games are at Memorial Gardens.
