MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS FINISH 1-1 ON ROAD TRIP

Brian Doherty Photo
The Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball team knew they would be in tough hitting the road for their first road trip of the young OUA season.

It wasn't just because it was a road trip, and it wasn't just because of where they were going, but it was because of who they were playing.

The Lakers travelled to Hamilton Friday night to face the top ranked team in the CIS, the McMaster Marauders.

Aside from the first set, the Lakers hung tough, but were swept by a team with national team calibre players.

Cam Branch led the Lakers offence with 10 kills against the Marauders.

Saturday, looking for a weekend split, which they knew wouldn't be easy facing the Waterloo Warriors, the Lakers came you flying.

Nipissing took the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-18 and despite the match being very tight, the Lakers looked to be in great shape to wrap up a quick victory.

The Warriors had other plans, however, as they fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie things up, winning 25-23 and 25-17, and forced a fifth and final set.

In the fifth, the Lakers led from start to finish, coming away with a 15-13 win - good for their second victory of the season, which evens up their record at 2-2 through the first two weekends.

Cam Branch had 16 kills, Lyndon Sonego had 11 and Warren Taylor added 10 in the victory over Waterloo.

Nipissing will return home for a three match homestand, hosting Queens and RMC this Friday and Saturday before welcoming York to North Bay on Nov. 14.
