MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS EARN GRITTY FOUR-SET WIN

Brian Doherty Photo
Gutsy and scrappy is an appropriate way to describe a big win for the Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball team Saturday afternoon.

Nipissing picked up their second straight win and moved into a third place tie thanks to a 3-1 win over the York Lions at the RJS Athletic Centre.

While it wasn't easy, it was a big win for the team, who has been playing some really good volleyball lately, even though they haven't necessarily seen the results in the win column.

The teams traded wins in the first two sets, with the Lakers slipping past the Lions 25-23 to kick off the match, but York replied to win 25-20 to even the match 1-1.

The Lakers took over in the third and fourth and dictated the play, even though the scores remained close.

A 25-19 win put Nipissing in a position to close out the match, and they came from behind in the fourth to pick up the set and match.

Trailing 22-21, Nipissing went on a run of four straight points to hit 25 and claim the victory.

Offensively, Lyndon Sonego stepped up with 14 kills to the Lakers, while Cam Branch added 11 in the win. Jack Peckham also earned seven.

Sitting at 4-3 and on a two game winning streak, the Lakers are currently tied for third place, with just four road matches left on the schedule for this semester.

It begins with a trip to Toronto to face the Varsity Blues Friday and Ryerson Saturday.

From there, Nipissing will travel to Guelph and York to close out the semester at the end of the month.
