WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS READY FOR TOUGH TEST

Brian Doherty Photo
It's always frustrating to lose by one goal – whether it's 6-5 or 1-0 – but there is no sense of panic for the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team, who has their attention focused on their lone game this weekend.

Riding a streak of 5-0-1 heading into this past weekend, the Lakers offensive ran dry, as they were shutout by the Laurentian Voyageurs, a team that has edged the Lakers twice this season, by one goal each time.

The loss, which came on the road, was the team's first regulation loss away from home and first regulation loss overall since Oct. 10 – a run of six games and over a month.

Nipissing now holds a record of 3-1-1 away from home and 2-2-1 in North Bay, at Memorial Gardens, where they'll play their only game of the weekend.

The Lakers will host the Guelph Gryphons, a team that has only lost twice so far this season and is currently riding a five game winning streak.

An impressive stat; the Gryphons have only surrendered two goals in their seven wins, recording five shutouts to this point.

While it's not quite half-way through the season, the OUA is already as tight as it can be, with 10 points separating nine teams and just five in between the top seven squads.

Currently, Guelph sits tied for first place with the Queens Gaels at 21 points, while the Lakers are in sixth place, but just four points out of first, with 17 points.

In the goals for-goals against department, the Gryphons are a league-best plus-22, allowing just seven goals through nine games.

Nipissing is minus one, but is tied for fifth best defensively, allowing only 15 goals this year through 10 games.

A win and some favourable decisions could see the Lakers jump from sixth place all the way up to a second place tie, but Nipissing is more focused on playing well, sticking to their game plan and the results will follow.

Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gardens.
