Coming off a weekend split - which meant their first ever OUA/CIS victory - the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team was looking for a big weekend on the road.
Unfortunately, things didn't get off to the start they were hoping for, as a tough second half resulted in a 86-55 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves, who have won two in a row.
Both teams came out shooting in the opening quarter, with the Thunderwolves pulling away, scoring the final three points to pull away and take an 18-14 into the second.
The teams continued to shoot well in the second quarter, but it was Lakehead who took control, building up a 23-14 lead early in the quarter.
Nipissing fought back and stayed in the game thanks to some strong play, but were outscored 22-17 in the quarter and trailed 40-31 after 20 minutes of play.
The Lakers struggled in the second half and it showed on the scoreboard, as Lakehead pulled away, scoring 46 points in the half, including a big third quarter where they put up 26 to grab the momentum.
The Lakers attempted to fight back, however, the Thunderwolves were too much and cruised to the victory.
Claire Abbott,
Mackenzie Bahm and
Rachel Jaworowicz all scored nine points to lead the Nipissing offence.
The Lakers will try to bounce back and finish their weekend with a win, when they hit the court against the Guelph Gryphons tonight at 6 p.m.
