The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was far from in a slump, but their win Friday night was huge for a couple of different reasons.
The victory was thanks to three unanswered goals that erased a 2-0 deficit and gave the Lakers a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Nipissing had dropped two in a row entering the weekend and while far from panicking, they did want to bounce back quickly and they were able to do that. And thanks to the extra point, they moved closer to Toronto in the standings.
After a scoreless first period, Toronto opened the score in the middle frame with a power play goal and would extend their lead early in the third period with another goal on the man advantage.
Down 2-0, captain
Carly Marchment found the back of the net to cut the lead and with just over five minutes remaining in the game, Marchment picked up an assist on
Kaley Tienhaara's power play goal to tie the game.
Both Marchment and Tienhaara finished with a goal and an assist in the contest.
The score would remain 2-2 after 60 minutes and still after 65 before
Taylor Murphy ended it in the second overtime period, giving the Lakers the victory and two points, while Toronto picked up one.
Jackie Rochefort was very good in net again, turning aside 34 shots for the victory.
The Lakers have now won six of eight and are just four points out of third place in the OUA.
Nipissing remains on the road for their final game of the first semester, as they take on the Ryerson Rams Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Toronto.
